Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying such treatments need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle management.
