A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in public works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
